Rayah is the main character who spent her whole young life being literally tortured and criticized and bullied by everyone around her who used "service to the Lighter Nation" as their justification. Slavery is acceptable, while rank and power are of the utmost importance. Rayah is stronger than she thinks, and as her last chance to prove herself comes swiftly, she finds that she is more powerful than ANYONE gives her credit for.
