โฆ Synopsis
I n the course of a study on the heat production in mammalian muscle (Cattell and Shorr, '32) it was observed that the delayed heat in oxygen varied in relation to the initial heat, depending upon the type of contraction. I n the case of a series of two or three twitches at room temperatures the delayed heat was about 1.5 times the initial heat, whereas for a short tetanus in the same muscle this ratio increased to a value of between 2.5 and 3.5. While we believe that this is the first instance in which such a difference has been reported for a single muscle, it is not surprising in view of the newer theories regarding the chemistry of muscular contraction.
