✦ Synopsis
MoS solid lubrication coatings were deposited by magnetron sputtering on the ceramic inserts. Their microstructures and effect on 2 Ž . Ž . cutting performance were investigated by scanning electron microscopy SEM , X-ray diffraction XRD , EDAX, and X-ray photo-Ž . electron spectroscopy XPS . The wear resistance and life of ceramic tools with and without MoS coating were compared in real cutting 2 experiments. The results showed that the flank wear of ceramic cutting tools with MoS coating is reduced and their wear life extended 2 markedly. The mechanisms of life-extending were analyzed.
