## Abstract Fibreoptic endoscopy has provided a new dimension in the diagnosis and management of oesophageal and upper gastrointestinal disorders. Its value as an aid to surgery of the lower oesophagus is demonstrated in a case of the Mallory-Weiss syndrome.
