β¦ Synopsis
Ever since Oehler ('16) was unsuccessful in cultivating sterile amoeba in medialacking solid food it has been assumed that sterile amoebae cultures cannot be maintained unless solid food is present. This idea has been accepted in textbooks and has received confirmation from the work of Lwoff ('32) who was unable to grow Acanthamoeloa castellanii without solid food. On the basis of these results Lwoff called the amoebae 'phagotropes obligatoires' stating that they were absolutely dependent for their development on solid food. Others explained this phenomenon by saying that amoebae were not capable of preparing their own vitamins and were therefore dependent upon foods containing vitamins (Buddenbrock, '28).
