✦ Synopsis
Jones' found that under mild conditions cycl.ooctatetraene dimeriaed to give two isomers, one (A) with m.p.76' and the other (B) with m.p. 52'. He formulated (A) as 2, with four double bonds. Jones'experimental findings were confirmed by Sohrgder' who alse observed that isomer (A) undergoes photolytic decomposition to benzene and an unidentified hydrocarbon, CC), C,oR,o. He obtained enough evidence to conclude that (C) was bullvalene, tricycle [3.3.2.04'6 Ideca-2,7,9,-triene, II, and that the dimer (A) we.s related to it having formula $&. Eullvalene itseXf had been a hypetheticel conpound postulated by Roering and Roth3 in a review of tranaannular interactions in cyclopropane derivative& Schrauzer, Gloclcner and Her&yi4 found that the reaction of (A) with
