β¦ Synopsis
Since 1956 the Division of the Biology of Potable, Industrial and Waste Water belonging to the Zoological Institute of the University of Leipzig annually organizes courses of technical hydrobiology of alternately introductory and advanced character . These courses were started by Professor Dr . ARNO WETZEL, who habilitated there in 1928 with his well known study "Der Faulschlamm and seine ciliaten Leitformen" . (Among his graduate students there was also Prof . Dr . H . LIEBMANN, who has deserved well of the applied hydrobiology not only in Germany, but also in whole Europe .) In 1952 Prof. Dr . WETZEL returned to the University of Leipzig and immediately founded the division, which was officially recognized in 1956 . More than 40 hydrobiologists were trained by him in the course of the 8 years till 1960, when he retired . He is now one of the three main editors of the "Internationale Revue dergesamtenHydrobiologie" . The students of Prof. Dr . WETZEL are active in research and control laboratories belonging to the water hygiene and water economy and some of them are directly employed in industrial enterprises . Professor WETZEL is constantly in connection with the division and with his students, who are arriving at the courses together with specialists of other scientific branches interested in aquatic biology .
