✦ Synopsis


We derive a quantum formula of the dipole matrix element for parabolic Rydberg states in terms of the Bessel functions without appealing to any quasiclassical methods. We exploit this quantum formula to explain the discrepancy between the other quasi-classical expressions available in the literature in terms of the Airy functions. We use the quantum formula to examine critically the region of validity of the corresponding formula derived by Born using the classical electron orbit and correspondence principle.
