โœฆ Synopsis

Monomer reactivity ratios have been determined from the copolyrnerization of methyl methacrylate with (a) t4C-diethyl maleate and (b) t4C-diethyl fumarate initiated with 1.1' azo-bisisobutyronitrile at 60 ยฐ. Values of 354+ 57 and 0 for the methyl methacrylate--diethyl maleate system are very different from the previously reported values of 20 and 0 obtained using micro-analytical methods. The monomer reactivity ratios for the methyl methacrylate--diethyl fumarate system are 40-4 + 0"2 and0"03 + 0.02 indicating the expected greater reactivity of the furnarate compared with the maleate. No unusual features were observed in the rates of copolymerization.

The radical trapping technique employing the stable nitroxide 1 as a scavenger has been used to study the reaction of t-butoxyl radicals with diethyl fumarate and with diethyl maleate. The major pathway with both monomers is hydrogen abstraction from the ester alkyl groups by t-butoxyl radicals. The

Radical copolymerlzations of 2-acryloyloxyethyl diethyl phosphate (ADP) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and with styrene were carried out under various conditions. The reactivity ratios were determined by the method of Fineman-Ross. Under a given set of conditions, the reactivity of the acrylate term
