## Abstract __N__‐Urethane‐protected __N__‐carboxyanhydrides (UNCAs) are very reactives. They have been successfully used in peptide synthesis, in both solution and solid phase. We have demonstrated that UNCAs are interesting starting materials for the synthesis of various amino acid derivatives. C

A synthesis of the N-carboxyanhydrides (NCA's) of several a-ammo acids using bis(trichloromethyl)carbonate, I, is reported. The triphosgene is used to supply phosgene in situ in stoichiometric amounts; it is particularly effective for preparing NCA's of amino acids with long, aliphatic side chains.
