✦ Synopsis

A method is proposed to obtain the high-performance artiÿcial boundary conditions for solving the time-dependent wave guide problems in an unbounded domain. Using the variable separation method, it is possible to reduce the spatial variables of the wave equation by one. Furthermore, introducing auxiliary functions makes the reduced wave equation a linear ÿrst-order ordinary di erential system with one control input. Solving the closed-loop control system, a stable and accurate artiÿcial boundary condition is obtained in a rigorous mathematical manner. Numerical examples have demonstrated the e ectiveness of the proposed artiÿcial boundary conditions for the time-dependent wave guide problems in unbounded domain.

Asymptotic and exact local radiation boundary conditions (RBC) for the scalar time-dependent wave equation, ÿrst derived by Hagstrom and Hariharan, are reformulated as an auxiliary Cauchy problem for each radial harmonic on a spherical boundary. The reformulation is based on the hierarchy of local b
