Octahedrally and tetrahedrally coordinated MnSe MBE-layers and polycrystalline thin films and octahedrally coordinated (Mn, Cd)Se (\_zMn 2 0.8) bulk crystals are investigated by luminescence and excitation spectroscopy. The results are discussed in the framework of a ligand-field-model. Below the Nt
