✦ Synopsis

The number of cortical units per ciliary row, estimated by counts of argentophilic elements in Chatton-Lwoff preparations, declines as the number of ciliary rows rises. The total number of cortical units i n the entire cell is not demonstrably correlated with the number of ciliary rows. These observations imply that the mechanisms governing the total supply of cortical units are independent of the mechanisms governing their spatial deployment.
