This fascinating work covers the eventful years from 1549 to 1552, and is rich in the lore of late Tudor England. A prologue examines the circumstances of the death of King Henry VIII and the intrigue surrounding his last will and testament. Many stirring and fascinating recreations of poignant historical moments come to life, such as King Henry's last words with the Princesses Mary and Elizabeth and Prince Edward. The novel goes on to relate the story of the accession of the young prince to the throne of England as Edward VI (1547-1553) and the involvement of Edward Seymour, the 1st Duke of Somerset, as Protector of England during part of the young king's childhood. The novel weaves a rich tapestry of royal pageantry and intrigue, swirling with plot and counterplot, and culminating in Somerset's final fall from power, his imprisonment in the Tower of London, and execution on January 22, 1552.
