✦ Synopsis

It was'reported recently (1) that although N-acetylindolino exist6 mainly in the e conform&ion I, N-acetyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoiino appears to exist uinly in the E confor-m&ion, II. The evidence in the indolino case wes that the proton magnetic reeonence (p.m.r.) of the H, proton moved 1.77 p.p.m. downfield on ecylation of the beso, whereas the eignel for H8 in the tetrahydroquinolino seria8 could not be distinguished from those of the other arometic protons. Additional evidence for the axe conformation II was the 0.73 p.p.m. downfield -
