✦ Synopsis

We have con®rmed the validity of Chatwin and Sullivan's a±b model using our experimental results in a thermal wake. Using the same data set, we have also examined and validated Derksen and Sullivan's maximum entropy formulation to approximate the probability density function of a turbulent contaminant ¯uctuation when only the fourth and the lower order moments are known. In addition, the paper provides evidence to suggest the kurtosis is quadratically dependent on skewness. The measurements were made in a thermal wake created by a heated cylinder in a fully developed turbulent pipe ¯ow, at 7 stations from 16 . 7 to 58 . 3 cylinder diameters downstream of the source. The Reynolds number is 180,000 based on the centreline mean velocity and the pipe diameter (or 11,000 based on the cylinder diameter). The results presented in this paper include the cross-stream distributions of the mean and root mean square velocity and temperature as well as the probability density functions of the temperature ¯uctuations.

## Abstract The effect of the presence of several small carbohydrates on the measurement of the α‐amylase activity was determined over a broad concentration range. At low carbohydrate concentrations, a distinct maximum in the α‐amylase activity versus concentration curves was observed in several ca

A microcontinuum model is formulated to describe electrokinetic transduction interactions and transport in the extracellular matrix (ECM) in terms of microscopic structural and compositional parameters. A unit cell technique is used in which the ECM is modeled as an ordered array of charged solid cy

A new formulation (CLS-PCM) for the calculation of the apparent surface charges in the framework of the ab initio polarizable continuum model of the solvent (PCM) is introduced. Its performance is compared with that of the original iterative version (ITER-PCM) of the method as well as with a matrici
