✦ Synopsis
Until recently, manufacturers' claims for computers in the home were without much foundation. Now that there are 14 million computers in U.S. homes, we must reassess the potential impact of those computers on the education of children. The author describes four major ways that computers can impact the intellectual growth of students in the home: 1. use of the new tools -word processing, construction sets, data bases, and discovery learning; 2. computer-based telecommunication to interconnect students from several countries in mutual learning experiences; 3. a college program which offers degree programs through teleconferencing; and, 4. information retrieval through telecommunication and using the new CD ROMs. He also describes a school-district-wide experiment to explore the effects of home access to computers in an environment where every child and every faculty member has a computer in the home, and where the computer is integrated into the school curriculum.
