✦ Synopsis

In this paper I discuss some of the epistemological and metaphysical assumptions exhibited by the computationalist paradigm in its relation to designing. I will argue that although computational techniques are powerful design tools, the computationalist paradigm itself does not adequately fit actual design activity and that it in any case reflects an outdated epistemology which threatens to impoverish our understanding of design activity in its wider context.
