✦ Synopsis

The radiation view factor represents the fraction of overall heat output that strikes the target object and is dependent upon the geometry of the flame and the target object. This study is designed to overcome two deficiencies in previous attempts to predict the view factor for a fire. These are the description of the flame and target geometries, and the computational approach to calculation. Pool and jet fires are often considered as cylinders of flame tilted by the wind. Conical flame shapes have also been proposed l-3 A general model of the flame is developed that covers .

both these specific cases. The view factor is calculated for both finite and differential target objects. The algorithms proposed use contour integration to determine the view factor for a differential area target. This approach is extended to a finite target object by considering the differential elements that make up the target.
