✦ Synopsis

A traditional hospital outpatient clinic for the follow-up of patients with mental illness in old age was replaced by home visits (the community clinic). As a preliminary study, the first six community clinics were compared with six outpatient clinics and found to be superior on several practical measures (including the percentage of booked patients who were successfully seen and the number of carers seen) as well as in terms of information obtained. The DHSS does not monitor this activity but it is an important development of specialist services for the elderly mentally ill.
