✦ Synopsis


We present 1 study of the collisional behaviour of chlorine atoms in the 2P t12 spin orbit state, 881 cm-l above the 3pxz level in the 3ps ground state configuration. Cl(32P,,2) was generated by the repetitive, pulsed irradiation of CC& and monitored photoeIectricalIy in absorption by time-resolved attenuation of atomic resonance radiation in the vacuum ultraviolet at h = 136.34 nm t3p44s(ZP3/2f c-3p5CZP&)f_ The method includes a sophisticated signal averaging system and will be of general applicability to the kinetic study of this important atomic state, one that is of considerable current interest but that has hitherro been the subject of very limited investigation by direct observation. Absolute rate constants (k~ cm3 molecule-t, s -I, 300 K) are reported for coilisionaI quenching by the gases CC4 [(2.0 f 0.2) X lo-to], Cla [(4-S + O-4) X IO-" ], 02 [(Z.Ic 0.5) X IO-" ] and HeIf3.8 * 0.6) X 10't5].
