The most important synthesis of the valence isomer of benzenoid hydrocarbon, benzvalene (A) and naphthovalene (benzobenzvalene) (2) involves cyclization of the intermediate carbene species resulting from the cyclopentadienyl and/or the indenyl anlon with dichloromethane in the presence of alkyllithium to form the bicyclo[l.l.O]butane system.
