✦ Synopsis
A high-resolution mass-spectrometer has been used to analyse the products of carbonisation of several polycyclic molecules with phthalic anhydride and phthalimide. The objective was to ascertain the mechanism of reaction of these species because of a report that the addition of phthalic anhydride enhances the degree of graphitisation of carbazole. The mechanism which this study suggests is one of further phenylation of the aromatic comnounds rather than an increase in the number of rings in the compounds, e.g. anthracene going to tetracene.
