In tables of data and through dispassionate analysis, Mr. Kahn makes it only too clear that unless we understand that the problem is one of sheer survival and are willing to plan for and spend enough money adequately to prepare for all eventualities, we cannot hope to avoid catastrophe. Mr. Kahn's main purpose in writing the book is to show that it is possible to decrease the probability of catastrophic nuclear war and to lessen its destructive effects if it does occur. The book should be read by all Congressmen, state officials, and those who are responsible for formulating our national defense policy. All readers will not agree with Mr. Kahn's analysis, but they should find it difficult to refute his objective arguments.
