Fox tliwussctl : I--red Spectra in the 3p Region of Naphthalene, a-and p-methylnaphthalenes, Quinoline and Iso-Quinoline : anAid toAnalysis. [By J. J.Fos and A. E. NAI~TIS.] Absorption spcctra of nnplithnlcnc, quinoliuc, isoquinolinc and a-and ~-mcthylnnphthnlcncs in carbon tetrachloride solution liavc bccn esiilnined in the region 3.6 to 3.8p, with sufficient resolution to give all details of the bands. The first threc coinpounds have a region of absorption, with somcwhnt coinplcs structurc, at about 3-27p, arising froin CH groups, while thc remaining two compounds linvc in addition, nt longer wavclengths up to 3-5p, a sct of bands attributablc'to the CโฌI, group. The spectra of quinolinc and isoquinolinc difler sulficicntly to bc used as a means of identification and cstiniation. Quinolinc ant1 a-methylnaphthalcnc huvc spcctru which in sonic ways rcsemblc those of simplc bcnzciic dcri~iiti~cs in tbc 3 -27p region, wlLilc iso-quiiiolinc and ~-11ictliylnap11th~leuc iirc morc like naphthnlcnc. It is pointcd out that tlic m.p.s. of these p-substituted compounds, although lowcr than naphthalene, arc considerably higher than tlic a-substitutcd conipouuds, and this appears to bc general.
