✦ Synopsis


Abstraet--A detailed study of the kinetics and other aspects of the polymerization of fluoral initiated by boron trifluoride etherate in CH2C12 has shown that (i) polymerization only occurs in the presence of water (added or adventitious); (ii) initiation and propagation are controlled by the position of equilibrium in the reaction: HO(CFaCHO),H + BFa(C2Hs)20 ~-HO(CFaCHO)oH.BFa + (C2H5)20;

(iii) the polymer DPo is given at any point by the ratio of fluoral used to initial water content and (iv) there is no true termination step; thus the polymer is living and can add further monomer even after exposure to air. The reactions were followed by automatically recording the solution vapour pressure. The complex conversion/time curves obtained by this novel technique are adequately explained by the suggested mechanism.
