โœฆ Synopsis

The electrochemical reduction of three o-halonitrobenzenes at mercury in acidic 50% npropanol/water has been studied and compared with that of nitrobenzene. The objective of this study was to seek conditions for the complete 6e reduction to the corresponding anilines; with the fluoro-and chlorocompounds thiscould be achieved in yields exceeding 75 p; and at current densities above 100 mA cm-* using 0.1 M H,SO, as the electrolyte. With o-bromonitrobenezene the yield was lower because of competing cleavage of the GBr bond.
