The curious origin of the internal carotid in Varanus varius in which the vessel is subdivided into two channe,ls, which may communicate by several openings (Adams, '52), raises two questions: firstly, as to whether this obtains in other lizards in which the ductus caroticus is absent, and secondly, what relation this form of origin has to that of lizards with a ductus caroticus, where the internal carotid arises from the ascending limb of the carotid arch near the summit by several (2-5 or more) openings (Adams, '53). Chumaeleo would seem especially suitable for the study of this matter, because, although the ductus caroticus usually disappears completely, on rare occasions it may persist, although only as a very fine

This report documents the development of the autopodium of the common chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleo) using light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Three main periods were distinguished during the morphogenesis of this structure. In the first period (sta
