In our society, the account of the boy who made the first dragonfly would be called a “Bible story.” Like stories based on the Old Testament or Pentateuch, this narrative is intended to teach both the history and morality of a people. There is one important difference. The Zunis had no written language to keep alive their tribal wisdom. Instead it was passed on orally-memorized by children who, in turn, taught it to their own children.
