✦ Synopsis

The focus of this paper is upon the measurement and interpretation of the boiling rates of LNG on materials which could be used as dike floors in an LNG facility. Soils, sand, insulating concretes, polyurethane, and corrugated aluminium were studied. For all except the last, the boiling rates could be correlated with a one-dimensional conduction heattransfer model which contains a single characterizing parameter. An insulating concrete containing glass fibres (G-24) was shown to have both a low boiling rate and a high strength. Also, the use of corrugated aluminium over soft proved to be a very effective insulation.
