โฆ Synopsis
In his Preface, the author states that 'this is not an authoritative treatise nor a critical review' and that the book 'is intended for a wide variety of readers'. He makes the point that 'the study of membranes has the distinction of not being part of any one of the classical disciplines'. The book comprises fifteen chapters which include one on the components of membranes; several on bilayers; considerations of phospholipids, glycoproteins and glycolipids; facilitated, coupled and bulk transport; ionophores; gated channels and energy transduction. The text is amplified by numerous clear tables and diagrams. The author has infused the text with his obvious enthusiasm and this should prove most stimulating even to the most uninitiated reader.
