C'est dans ce roman que Philipp Marlowe, figure mythique du roman noir, fait sa première apparition. Le vieux général Sternwood fait appel aux services du détective privé pour mettre fin au chantage dont est victime sa plus jeune fille, Carmen. Comme va le découvrir Philip Marlowe, Carmen et sa soeur sont dépourvues de sens moral, la première se drogue et est nymphomane, l'autre boit et perd des fortunes au jeu. Si l'enquête semble d'abord facile car liée à des reconnaissances de dettes, elle va très vite se compliquer quand des gangsters chevronnés vont entrer dans la danse... Ce roman a été porté à l'écran en 1946 par Howard Hawks, avec Humphrey Bogart dans le rôle de Marlowe.
