✦ Synopsis

The children who read The Tale of Peter Rabbit when it was first published in 1902 are now themselves grandparents and great-grand parents but the appeal of Beatrix Potter's delightful animal characters is still as great as it was eighty-five years ago. Pat Menchini read the little books as a child and has for a long time wanted to bring her skills as a fashion designer to this charming miniature world of animals, flowers and landscapes. In this book you will find a complete range of classic fashion garments for all ages from babies to adults, both men and women. The patterns, which are all based on Beatrix Potter's own watercolours, include a beautiful christening robe, pramsuits, cosy outfits for toddlers, practical and pretty sweaters and tops for active children, elegant fashion garments for women, and chunky knits for men. Some have motifs based on the well-loved animal characters, others have specially created jacquard and textured designs inspired by Beatrix Potter's flower and landscape paintings. Several of the garments are made from the wool of Herdwick sheep, the hardy upland breed which Beatrix Potter herself bred on her Lake District farms. All the garments are photographed in full colour by fashion photographer Tony Boase, many on location in Beatrix Potter's own English Lake District. Charts, diagrams, details from the patterns and international conversion tables added to the clarity of the instructions make this beautifully laid-out book straightforward to follow for even the inexperienced knitter, while the expert will find plenty of challenge in the intricacy of some of the designs.Pat Menchini here presents a unique range of designs which will enable expert and amateur knitter alike to create beautiful and distinctive garments for the whole family.

Even before she emerged from the cot in her nursery, Beatrix Potter was up against it. With her prodigious memory she recalled being placed 'under the tyranny of a cross old nurse' who introduced her to 'witches, fairies and the creed of the terrible John Calvin'. More sadness followed. She had no s
