Американский бомбардировщик B-58 Hustler стал первым сверхзвуковым самолётом в своем классе. Эти машины должны были первыми прорываться через ПВО Советского Союза, расчищая путь для тяжелых B-52.
Среди самолётов своего времени они выделялись не только мощным бортовым оборудованием и отличными летно-техническими характеристиками, но и высоким уровнем аварийности. Это стало одной из причин снятия B-58 Hustler с вооружения.Всего было выпущено 116 самолетов и 26 из них были потеряны в различных происшествиях и катастрофах.
В 1962 г. командование ВВС отказалось от дальнейшей закупки B-58 Hustler, а для компенсации недостатка стратегических бомбардировщиков решили оставить в боевом составе одно крыло B-47, которое ранее подлежало расформированию. Все дело было в цене одного самолёта, которая достигла целых 14 млн. USD. На эти деньги можно было бы купить девять баллистических ракет Titan II, или два бомбардировщика B-52, или семь истребителей F-4 Phantom.
