In order to test for a photo [2+2]-cycloadditiou betweeu two aso-uults a tetracyclic bisazo-compouud (I) hae been constructed, for which the X-ray aualysls confirms a plauar-parallel arrangement of the N2-uults and trausauuular N-Ndistances of 2.877 1 and 2.821 1, resp. In prellmiuary photoexperiments N2-ellmiuatiou predomiuates la 1; in the N-oxides ;vii , however, after dfrect excltatiou (I= 254 nm) N2/N20-metathesis (:I:: aud i?, resp.) Is observed.
