✦ Synopsis
In ths paper we report the first Identicatlon of a Jahn-Teller (J-T) splitting (5 160 cm-*) arising via quadratic vibronx coupling III a mode which IS non-active in the lmear J-T coupling. This sphtting has been detected in the hot-baud structure of the out-of-plane mode uzo(e2u) UI the Rydberg spectrum of benzene converging to the fust ionization limit. This observation enables us to resolve the long-standing controversy with respect to the ass,onment of the relevant Rydberg spectrum
