✦ Synopsis

Resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) offers a number of advantageous features for the analysis of complex mixtures, e.g. the ability to ionize preselected compounds and to control the degree of fragmentation, and, for a large number of substances, a high ionization efficiency. These features require that the excited molecular state(s) involved in the MPI process are not significantly depleted during the duration of the laser pulse. For several groups of environmentally important molecules, such as metal organic compounds, this is not the case. In this work it is demonstrated that, for a number of such molecules, the interesting features of REMPI for analysis can largely be regained, for quickly relaxing systems, by the application of ultra-short laser pulses.

Trivalent and hexavalent chromium oxides have been examined by time-of-flight laser microprobe mass spectrometry and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICRMS). The positive-ion spectra show a strong correlation with the valency of chromium in the oxide. Thus, the positive

Cation adduction to oligonucleotides and nucleic acids during mass spectrometric analysis is a recurrent problem. We have found that the use of organic base solutions of high gas-phase proton affinity, as used previously in electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, can significantly reduce the cati
