✦ Synopsis
Bilby, Cottrell and Swinden model solutions for a penny-shaped crack subject to an axisymmetric stress are given. Approximate solutions for a semi-circular crack in a half-plane are constructed and applied to predicting the fracture stress of a crack subject to uniform tensile loading. The analytically determined fracture stresses are in good agreement with published experimental results.
