β¦ Synopsis
The phenomenon of irradiation creep in graphite is essential to the design and construction of graphite-moderated reactors. Recent experimental results have shown large apparent reductions in creep rate for creep strains greater than ?I'%. It is shown that this is not a true reduction in creep rate, but is an artifact resulting from changes in the properties of the stressed samples, which modify their dimensional changes under irradiation compared to the unstressed control samples, and this is not accounted for in the standard definition of creep strain.

The theory of creep of a graphite crystal under fast neutron irradiation is developed assuming that it occurs by basal slip activated by fast neutron induced atomic displacements. The basal slip rate is calculated for dislocations gliding through an arra\ of pinning points which are both created and

The paper presents the results of graphite irradiations carried out in the Dounreay Fast Reactor; the use of this reactor for graphite irradiations is advantageous for several reasons. The total neutron flux is very high, practically all the neutrons have energies capable of producing damage in grap
