β¦ Synopsis
ONE FlGURE
Cook ( '32) was unable to demonstrate the repayment of an "oxygen debt" during recovery from anaerobiosis in the termite, Zootermopsis (Termopsis) nevadensis Hagen. An excess consumption of oxygen during recovery equal to the amount of oxygen missed during anaerobiosis had previously been shown to occur in the cockroach (Davis and Slater, '26, '28; Slater, '27), and in several grasshoppers (Bodine, '28). More recently, increased oxygen consumption during recovery from anaerobiosis has been found in the larvae of Chironomus and Ephemera vulgata by Harnisch ('36, '37, a and b, '39 a ) .
The aim of the investigation reported in this paper was to reconsider the question of anaerobic metabolism in Zootermopsis nevadensis.
