✦ Synopsis

T he American Cancer Society's (ACS's) 50-year history of investing in cancer research has played a part in many significant advances in cancer prevention and treatment. Because of the Society's contributions to the war on cancer, many forms of the disease now can be controlled effectively. Research is underway that is likely to hold the key to even more progress.

The ACS currently spends nearly $95 million a year on cancer research, up from $1.2 million in 1946, the year the first research grants were made. Changes to a program with a legacy of this size and significance are not made lightly. However, the ACS has chosen to restructure its entire cancer research program in response to changes in the health care environment.

This restructuring opens new opportunities for scientists and educators. Opportunities particularly will be evident in certain targeted areas, such as prostate carcinoma and behavioral research. The ACS already has established a behavioral research center that is pursuing projects such as a longitudinal study of cancer survivors.
