✦ Synopsis

Abstract

The Extreme Dependency Score (EDS) has been introduced in the verification of rare events because it does not vanish as other standard scores do. The EDS can be written as a function of the base rate and the hit rate. This paper analyses its dependency on the base rate. It is also shown how the score encourages hedging. Guidelines are provided to make proper use of the EDS when verifying the performance of a forecasting system. Copyright Β© 2009 Royal Meteorological Society

## Abstract Accurate prediction of rare high‐impact events represents a major challenge for weather and climate forecasting. Assessment of the skill at forecasting such events is problematic because of the rarity of such events. Skill scores traditionally used to verify deterministic forecasts of r

## Abstract The extreme dependency score (EDS) has been recently proposed as a non‐vanishing measure of skill to verify predictions of rare events. An idealized example is employed to investigate the properties of the EDS when the probability of the event happening is small, as is the case for rare
