✦ Synopsis
The work function of the lanthanum hexaboride (LaBs) layer evaporated on a tantalum ribbon surface was measured as a function of the evaporation time, using thermionic diode and electron beam methods. The work function decreases rapidly, passes through a minimum and saturates. The value of ~Om~n depends strongly on the temperature of the tantalum ribbon (2.8, 2.5 and 1.7 eV for 868, 715 and 20°C, respectively). Diffusion of some species (maybe lanthanum) from the evaporated layer to the clean part of the tantalum ribbon was observed and the activation energy for diffusion (1.7 eV/atom) was measured.
