✦ Synopsis

Absta-aet--Strong bonds between polyethylene and high energy substrates are obtained only if there is an interracial oxidation. This oxidation may be brought about by the catalytic action of the substrate itself in the case of steel, or by the use of an oxidizing agent. Lack of oxidation, and hence of strong bonding, may be brought about by excluding atmospheric oxygen, by incorporating an antioxidant into the polyethylene above a certain critical concentration, or by using a substrate such as copper which retards polyethylene oxidation.
