Summary
The historical development of “firing” as a treatment for various complaints in animals and man is followed from the first surviving written account by Vegetius (approximately AD 500) to the present day. Changing concepts as to the mechanism of action of the actual cautery are examined in relation to physiological understanding at various times and conflicting views and evident fallacies are discussed. It is of particular interest that firing of “sinewes” (tendons and ligaments) was expressly forbidden until the 18th century. It is concluded that “firing” is an outmoded practice for which there is no scientific justification.

On fait l'histoire des “feux” employés comme thérapie dans des conditions pathologiques diverses chez les animaux et chez l'Homme, depuis le premier texte les mentionnant, (Vegetius, environ 500 av JC), jusqu'à nos jours. L'évolution des conceptions sur le mécanisme d'action de la cautérisation actuelle est étudiée, en parallèle avec les connaissances physiologiques du moment; les théories opposées et les erreurs évidentes sont discutées. II est intéressant de noter que la cautérisation des “nerfs” (tendons et ligaments) était expressément proscrite jusqu'au 18 ème siècle. On en conclue que les “feux” sont une méthode dépassée pour laquelle n'existe aucune justification scientifique.
Zusammenfassung
Die geschichtliche Entwicklung des “Brennens” als Behandlung verschiedener Krankheitszustände bei Tieren und Menschen wird verfolgt von den ersten Berichten Vegetius' (ca. 500 v.Chr.) bis zum heutigen Tag. Wechselnde Auffassungen über die Mechanismen des Brennens werden untersucht in ihrer Beziehung zum physiologischen Wissen der Zeit. Widersprüchliche Ansichten und offensichtliche Fehlinterpretationen werden besprochen. Von besonderem Interesse ist, dass das Brennen sehniger Strukturen (Sehnen und Bänder) im 18. Jahrhundert ausdrücklich verboten war. Es wird geschlossen, dass “Brennen” eine veraltete Behandlung darstellt, die wissenschaftlich nicht gerechtfertigt werden kann.
