It has been shown
1,293 that N-8-arylethyl-1,2_dihydroisoquinolines, such as (l), can be cyclised by acids to berbine derivatives, for example (2), and it is also known 495 that the aminoacetaldehyde dialkylacetal (3) can be cyclised by acids to the 1,2-dihydroisoquinoline
