✦ Synopsis

AMract-In mixtures of sulphuric acid and water it is possible to hydrate cpionone to a tertiaq alcohol. Like rpionone this "cpionone hydrate*' consists of two geometrical isomers-& and ttonrwhich are interconverted easily. A mechanism of this reaction is proposed An analogous reaction of pionone with methanol is described;

the product is a methoxyether with the same geometrical isomerism as the hydrate.

## Abstract Base‐catalysed condensation reactions of nitroacetic esters with dipolarophiles to give isoxazole derivatives proceed faster, and often with higher yields, in the presence of water than in organic solvents such as chloroform. Kinetic profiles show that induction times are greatly reduce
