A seminar on analytical mechanics and stability theory at the M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University (MGU) was organized by Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences N. G. Chetayev at the beginning of the 1950s as a post-graduate seminar, but soon became, essentially, a scientific seminar for the whole city. After Chetayev passed away, the seminar was directed for almost half a century by Valentin Vital'evich Rumyantsev. Under his direction, the seminar became All-Union in character (from 1992 onwards, All-Russian) with international participation.

In September 2007, the analytical mechanics and stability theory seminar at the MGU continued its work under the direction of Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V. V. Beletskii and Professor A. V. Karapetyan.
