✦ Synopsis

DE WAAL et al.[l]

have measured the absorption rate of oxygen into sodium sulphite solutions in a packed column (I ft i.d., IOft high, I in Raschig rings), and have determined the interfacial areas and the mass transfer coefficient in the liquid in terms of the surface renewal rate. However, their experimental data have the following problems: (I) The values of kLa for the absorption of carbon dioxide into water are about 50 per cent smaller than those of the authors. ( 2) According to the recent paper[7] that the reaction order for oxygen depends on the oxygen concentration in the liquid phase at the interface, the data under their conditions follow the model of the second order reaction.

In the present paper the absorption of oxygen into sodium sulphite solutions in the presence of cobalt sulphate as a catalyst was carried out in a packed column, and the influence of the oxygen pressure upon the absorption rate and the interfacial areas were studied.

Results from experimental studies on the influence of pH within the alkaline range on sodium dithionite oxidation with molecular oxygen reveal that it is possible to follow the kinetics of the process by observation of the consumption of base needed to maintain a constant pH. Under the conditions st
