✦ Synopsis

Heavy water and radiosodium disap peared at a constant rate from the knee joints of normal and rheumatoid subjects. Although final conclusions are not permissible from the limited data, certain differences in the rates of absorption of these preparations were observed in the rheumatoid patients. Heavy water disappeared more slowly from rheumatoid joints after hydrocortisone was injected.

METHOD developed by Scholer and Codel for measurement of ab-

A sorption of radioactive sodium and heavy water (DzO) from the gastrointestinal tract has been applied to a study of absorption of these substances by synovial membrane of the knee joint of two healthy persons and five patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Studies of the absorption of radiosodium from normal knee joints have previously been made by counting continuously over the knee joint after intra-articular injection of the radios0dium.2,~
